I am a mom to a beautiful and firey little girl named Juna, animal lover, home owner and renovation queen, part time leathercrafter, casual art teacher, and photographer with over 15 years of experience.
My journey as an artist began in high school. I loved creating and was always found in the art room. After high school, I enrolled into the VisComm Program at Medicine Hat College. It was a sensational program and was taught by some pretty incredible and wonky profs. It was there that I found a love for experimenting with slide film and processing it in the darkroom (inspired by my all time favourite photographer, Nan Goldin.) I really found my calling for photography when I enrolled at the University of Lethbridge for my BFA. The University had a kick ass darkroom. Oh Film... I spent so many hours in that darkroom that I would get nose bleeds. That didn’t stop me (my father bought me a gas mask.) When developing in a darkroom, there are so many opportunities for failure and that was exciting and risky.
After achieving my BFA, I began my photo journey. People started hiring me. I couldn’t keep up so I quit my job as a waitress (because that’s what you do with an Art Degree), I opened a studio, and dedicated my next sequential 10 years to photographing beautiful souls. I picked up a side gig working as an outreach artist teaching art to kindergarteners within the school district and, well, began to love it. The thought of inspiring the youth and having a job with security drew me to moving to Vancouver to achieve my Ed Degree from UBC. I returned to Medicine Hat and within a month, I landed a teaching job. People kept contacting me to take their photos but I felt rusty and wasn’t happy with the way I processed anymore. So, I decided to take a step back, refocus, relearn, rebrand, start from scratch, and dedicate to learn, grow, and develop my style as a creative artist.
The most important thing I have learnt through my own journey is that life is complex. Life is both chaotic and beautiful. This is what makes life rich with meaning. It is my soul contract to capture this complexity. I love my job and the opportunity it grants me to build connections, the flexibility of owning my own business, and the ability to create art everyday is a blessing from God.
